Mortuary Lift Buying Guide: Casket, Body & Cadaver Lifts

A mortuary lift, also called a casket lift, body lift or cadaver lift, lets one or two staff move a decedent or casket between a cot, table, rack tier, cooler bay or retort door without manual lifting. This guide explains the two lift styles, the one measurement that decides most orders, and how each lift in our line compares.

Scissor lifts vs boom lifts

Scissor (platform) lifts raise a flat deck under a tray or body board. They suit rack loading, cooler bays and crematory charging, where a tray slides on and off the deck.

Boom (strap) lifts lift the body or casket from above on straps. They suit bed-to-cot transfers, dressing and casketing, and moving caskets in the preparation room.

Measure the lowest deck height first

Bottom-tier rack positions and vault cooler bays sit low. A scissor lift can only load them if its lowest deck height is below that tier. The 1030-LPL Low Profile Lift lowers to 13 inches. The H1000-M Hydraulic Scissor Lift starts at 20.5 inches, and the HD 1000 MAX G1 is not a low-profile lift. Measure every height you need to reach before ordering.

Common questions

Should a funeral home choose a hydraulic or electric body lift?

Manual hydraulic body lifts need no charging and have fewer parts to service. Electric, battery-powered lifts raise the load at the push of a button, which saves effort when staff make many transfers a day.

Which lift reaches the bottom rack tier?

The 1030-LPL Low Profile Lift, with a 13-inch lowest deck. Compare that figure with the height of your lowest rack tier or vault bay.

What capacity should I choose?

Most lifts in our line are rated to 1,000 lb, the Body Casket Lift XL to 900+ lb and the Covered Cadaver Scissor Lift to 800 lb. Choose a rating above the heaviest decedent or casket you expect to handle.

Can a lift include a scale?

Yes. The 1030-LPL and HD 1000 MAX G1 offer an optional integrated scale, chosen when you order.
