SMS disposable coverall and microporous cool-back coverall

Short answer: Choose the fabric by the liquid, not the job title. SMS breathes and stops dry particles and light splash. PE-coated and microporous film resist blood and diluted fluids. DuPont Tychem is for chemical splash and spills. Then choose the style (collar, hood, hood and boots) by how much of the body is exposed, and size up if you kneel or reach.

Fabric comparison

Fabric Best for Breathability Fluid resistance
SMS (spunbond-meltblown-spunbond) Dressing, removals, dry handling, visitation prep High Light splash
PE-coated polypropylene Embalming, intake, fluids Low Good for blood and diluted fluids
Microporous film with cool-back panel Long shifts, hot rooms, tents Medium Good on the front
Tychem 2000 Formaldehyde and chemical splash, decon Low Impervious to many chemicals
Tychem 4000 Spills and broader chemical splash Low Broader chemical barrier

Collar, hood or hood and boots

A collar style with open or elastic wrists and ankles is enough when a face shield and cap cover the head. A hood is the better choice for overhead work, cavity aspiration and removals in tight spaces. Attached boots or socks protect the ankles and shoes where floors get wet. Elastic wrists help seal gloves over the sleeve.

Seam types

Serged seams are stitched and suit dry work and light splash. Bound seams fold a strip of fabric over the stitching for better holdout. Taped seams are sealed and liquid-tight. If fluid will run down the front of the suit, buy bound or taped.

Sizing

Size Chest Height
M 38–40 in 5'5"–5'9"
L 42–44 in 5'8"–6'0"
XL 46–48 in 5'10"–6'2"
2XL 50–52 in 6'0"–6'3"
3XL 54–56 in 6'2"–6'5"

Size up if you wear the coverall over scrubs or street clothes, or if you kneel, bend and reach. Torn crotch seams are almost always a sizing problem. Check each product page for its exact size chart.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best disposable coverall for embalming?

A fluid-resistant PE-coated coverall with a hood for routine cases, and a DuPont Tychem 2000 coverall when formaldehyde splash or heavy fluids are expected.

Is an SMS coverall fluid resistant?

SMS resists light splash and stops dry particulates, but it is breathable and will pass liquid under pressure. Use PE-coated, microporous or Tychem for fluids.

Should I size up on disposable coveralls?

Usually yes. Size up if you wear the coverall over clothing or do a lot of bending and kneeling. Most torn seams come from coveralls that are too small.

How are disposable coveralls sold?

By the case. USPE SMS and PE-coated coveralls are 25 per case, most DuPont Tychem 2000 and 4000 coveralls are 12 per case, and the Tychem 2000 SFR is 4 per case.
