ENERGY & ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY CENTER™
Mortuary cooler performance depends on more than the equipment — proper sizing, DOE/AWEF-aware refrigeration selection, facility readiness, airflow, maintenance, and operating procedures all contribute.
ENERGY STAR is a recognized efficiency program for eligible commercial refrigerators and freezers — certification applies only to qualifying product categories and must be verified in official ENERGY STAR listings or manufacturer documentation. Specialized walk-in cooler and freezer refrigeration systems — remote condensing units, unit coolers, evaporators — are typically governed instead by DOE commercial refrigeration standards, including AWEF (Annual Walk-In Energy Factor), the federal efficiency metric for covered walk-in refrigeration systems. For mortuary cooler buyers, the key question is not simply “Is this ENERGY STAR?” The better question is: “What efficiency documentation applies to this specific refrigeration system, and what facility conditions are required for proper performance?” Buyer-education resources: DOE commercial refrigeration • ENERGY STAR commercial refrigeration.
American Mortuary Coolers is an authorized dealer for Heatcraft Refrigeration Products LLC. Heatcraft primarily manufactures commercial and industrial refrigeration equipment — air-cooled condensing units, low-profile and warehouse unit coolers, evaporators, controls, and walk-in cooler/freezer refrigeration systems. Because these are not residential appliances, applicable efficiency information generally relates to DOE AWEF requirements rather than consumer ENERGY STAR labeling. Where available and compatible, Heatcraft describes its intelliGen™ Refrigeration Controller as a factory-mounted electronic control solution for evaporators providing automatic superheat, room temperature, and intelligent defrost control for walk-in coolers and freezers — features that may support system visibility and energy-aware operation. Heatcraft also publishes low-GWP and CO2 refrigeration resources; refrigerant selection should be reviewed with qualified refrigeration professionals against availability, service capability, and jurisdictional requirements — CO2 is not appropriate for every mortuary application. Product-specific model data (horsepower, voltage, refrigerant, AWEF, controller options, warranty) is published on our product pages only after verification against current Heatcraft documentation — no specification is claimed unverified.
Energy-aware selection begins before purchase: a cooler that is incorrectly sized, poorly ventilated, improperly installed, frequently opened, overloaded, or poorly maintained may consume more energy and may not perform as intended. Plan body capacity to caseload; weigh walk-in vs upright by workflow and door-open frequency; verify ambient conditions and condenser ventilation; maintain gaskets and coils; select medium- vs low-temperature systems to the actual holding requirement; and use HALO where configured for visibility into temperature, door, and power events — HALO does not guarantee energy savings, preservation outcomes, or failure prevention. Full operating checklist: Energy & Environmental Responsibility Center (EN-1.0). Refrigerant duties: EPA §608 Policy (RF-1.0).
For counties, hospitals, universities, funeral home groups, and pathology labs evaluating energy use, we provide available product-specific documentation on request: manufacturer submittals, voltage/phase, refrigerant information, DOE/AWEF documentation where applicable, verified efficiency status where it exists, controller options, maintenance recommendations, and operating assumptions. Product-specific documentation controls over general website guidance. Request through the Procurement Packet.
This page is educational. Product-specific efficiency ratings, ENERGY STAR status, DOE/AWEF information, refrigerant details, and operating-cost estimates must be confirmed through current manufacturer documentation, official listings, written specifications, or your final quote. External links are buyer-education resources only and do not imply certification, endorsement, or approval by ENERGY STAR, DOE, EPA, FTC, or Heatcraft of any product unless product-specific documentation confirms that exact claim. Actual performance may vary by facility conditions.
