EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Sales Policy

DOCUMENT RF-1.0 • EFFECTIVE JULY 4, 2026 • 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F • AIM Act

CERTIFICATION REQUIRED TO PURCHASE REFRIGERANT

Federal law restricts the sale of refrigerant in containers larger than two (2) pounds — including R-404A, R-448A, R-507, R-410A, R-134a and other HFC, HFO-blend, and ozone-depleting refrigerants — to purchasers who hold a valid EPA Section 608 technician certification (or, for motor-vehicle refrigerants, Section 609). This restriction was extended to HFC refrigerants under EPA regulations and the AIM Act. American Mortuary Coolers will not release any regulated refrigerant order until buyer certification is verified.

§1 Who May Purchase

Regulated refrigerants may be sold only to: (a) an individual holding a current EPA §608 certification (Type I, II, III, or Universal, matching the equipment class); or (b) an employer of at least one §608-certified technician, where the employer provides written evidence of that employment and the technician’s certification. Purchases for stationary refrigeration equipment require §608 certification specifically.

§2 Verification at Order

After placing an order containing regulated refrigerant, Customer must provide: certificate holder’s full name, EPA certification number and type, and a copy of the certification card (email to cool@mymortuarycooler.com with your order number, or call 1-888-792-9315). Orders without verified certification are held; if certification cannot be verified within fifteen (15) days, the refrigerant line item is cancelled and refunded. Refrigerant charges factory-installed inside equipment are not affected by this restriction.

§3 Recordkeeping

As required by federal regulation, AMC maintains records of each regulated refrigerant sale — buyer name and company, certification number and type, refrigerant type and quantity, and date of sale — for a minimum of three (3) years, available to EPA on inspection. By purchasing, Customer consents to this recordkeeping.

§4 Cylinders, Venting & Disposal

Disposable (non-refillable) cylinder notice: under the AIM Act, the sale of disposable HFC cylinders is prohibited after December 31, 2026; refillable-cylinder alternatives will be offered as inventory transitions. Intentional venting or release of any refrigerant is prohibited under Clean Air Act §608. Recovery, reclamation, and cylinder disposal must follow EPA requirements, including use of certified recovery equipment and §608-certified reclaimers.

§5 A2L Refrigerants

A2L-class refrigerants (e.g., R-454B, R-32) are classified mildly flammable and must be handled only by trained, §608-certified technicians using A2L-rated equipment per the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable codes. See our A2L refrigerant equipment collection.

§6 Non-Returnable; Compliance With Law

Refrigerant is a hazardous, non-returnable product under the Returns and Cancellations Policy and Terms of Purchase §2A. Customer is solely responsible for lawful transport, storage, use, and disposal, and for compliance with any additional state refrigerant-management program (e.g., California CARB RMP, Washington Ch. 173-443 WAC). This policy is incorporated into the Terms of Purchase; Tennessee law and Washington County, TN venue apply.
