Custom Walk-In Coolers: What You Can Spec and Why It Matters
Custom walk-in coolers aren't a premium option. For many institutional buyers, they're the only option that actually works.
Standard walk-in cooler configurations work for standard facilities. But forensic suites, hospital morgue additions, veterinary diagnostic labs, university anatomy programs, military installations, and government facilities often have footprints, workflow requirements, and operational specs that standard units don't accommodate.
AMC builds custom walk-in coolers for institutional buyers with non-standard requirements. Here's what you can spec, what's realistic, and how the process works.

What you can customize in a walk-in cooler
Dimensions
Width, depth, and ceiling height can all be customized. AMC builds in one-inch increments to fit unusual facility footprints. If your morgue addition is 11×13 feet clear interior, that's what we build. Non-standard ceiling heights — for tall rack systems, large animal applications, or low-clearance mechanical rooms — are standard custom requests.
Door configurations
Single-door, dual-door, pass-through, and dual-access configurations are all available. Pass-through units — with entry doors on opposite walls — are common in forensic facilities where contamination control requires separate intake and release paths. Wide-clearance doors for bariatric or large-specimen transport can be spec'd to any opening width.

Interior configuration
Interior layout — racking placement, aisle width, rack type and tier count — is configured to match your workflow. Side-loading, end-loading, cantilever, and sliding-rail systems are all available. AMC designs the interior to match your specific body handling workflow, cot dimensions, and staff operating requirements.
Temperature zones
Combination cooler/freezer units with independently controlled temperature zones in a single footprint are available for institutions needing both short-term cooler storage and long-term freezer storage without separate units. See the cooler vs. freezer guide →
Refrigeration system
Self-contained or remote refrigeration, refrigerant type, defrost system, and backup/redundancy configuration can all be customized. For high-uptime applications, AMC can spec dual condensing units for redundancy. Refrigeration systems guide →
Bariatric configurations
Bariatric walk-in coolers for facilities handling oversized decedents require wider door openings, reinforced racking systems, and wider aisle clearance. AMC builds bariatric-configured walk-in coolers for facilities with documented oversized case requirements.
DMORT and forensic-specific features
Forensic and DMORT applications may require specific racking position numbering, chain-of-custody features, access control compatibility, or temperature logging integration. Mass casualty and DMORT guide →
