Thumb-Loop vs. Knit-Cuff vs. Open-Cuff Isolation Gowns: Best Embalming Gown Cuffs
The cuff is where the gown meets the glove, and it's the most common place for a gap to open. Here's how the three common cuff styles compare.
![]()
| Cuff | How it holds | Strengths | Weak spots |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plastic thumb loop | A thin loop of gown film over the thumb | Sleeve can't ride up; glove seals over it; nothing absorbs fluid | Takes a second longer to put on |
| Knit cuff | Stretch knit band at the wrist | Comfortable and snug | Can slide up the forearm; knit can wick fluid toward the skin |
| Open or plain cuff | Simple hem | Cheapest | Rides up easily and leaves a gap at the wrist |
Why thumb loops suit embalming
Embalming means a lot of reaching: across the table, into instrument trays, up to the machine. Each reach pulls the sleeve toward the elbow. With a thumb loop, the sleeve is anchored at the hand, so the glove-over-cuff seal holds. CDC lab training tells staff to pull the glove over, not under, the gown cuff, and a thumb loop makes that easy to keep.
Why plastic beats knit at the wrist
A knit cuff is fabric, and fabric can soak up fluid and hold it against the wrist. A polyethylene thumb loop is the same impervious film as the gown, so a splash at the wrist runs off.
Getting the most from a thumb-loop gown
- Hook your thumb through the loop before tying the back, so the sleeve sits flat.
- Pull the glove cuff over the gown cuff, past the loop.
- For extra coverage, use extended-cuff gloves such as the 10 mil 12-inch nitrile.
- At removal, the loop comes off with the glove. See how to put on and remove a thumb-loop gown.
