The zipper decides how a body bag opens, how easy identification is, and how much stress the bag takes when it is closed.

Envelope (curved U or C) zipper

The zipper runs in a U shape around the top, so the whole upper panel folds down. It is the most common style for removal and disaster bags because it gives full access for identification and viewing. Examples: 2XL Disaster Bag, 8 Handles, XL Chlorine-Free Bag, 8 Handles, Diamond Chlorine-Free Bag, Oversize XL, Adult Chlorine-Free Bag, No Handles.

Straight zipper

A single zipper down the center. Simple and economical, but the opening is narrower. Example: Economy White Vinyl Bag, Case of 25.

Perimeter zipper

The zipper runs around the edge so the top can fold completely back. Staff lay the bag open on a table and place the decedent on it. Example: Perimeter Zipper Chlorine-Free Bag, Case of 25 and the Water Recovery Mesh Bag, 10 Handles.

Zipper size

The number is the tooth size. #5 is a light zipper, #8 is a standard medium-duty zipper, and #10 is the heavy zipper used on 18 mil disaster bags. Larger teeth resist splitting under load and are easier to work with gloves.
