A2L Refrigerants Explained: What 2026 Refrigerant Rules Mean for Funeral Homes and Morgues
Federal refrigerant regulations retired legacy high-GWP Freon-class refrigerants, and the packaged systems on mortuary coolers changed with them. 2026-forward Heatcraft PRO³ systems run next-generation low-GWP A2L refrigerants.
What A2L means
A2L is a safety classification: low toxicity, mildly flammable, low global warming potential. These systems are UL listed for US and Canada, ship with warning symbols per the standard, and can include an optional MRLDS-450 refrigerant leak detection system that shuts down the compressor and drops the evaporator fan to low speed if a leak is sensed.
What changes for owners
- Startup discipline: the changing refrigerant models come with updated guidelines — completely read all startup instructions before using your packaged refrigeration system, including overflow and humidity drainage ports requiring hose adapters.
- Service qualifications: A2L service must be performed by personnel trained per UL 60335-2-89; no naked-flame leak detection, ever.
- Efficiency gains: the 2026 platform's extremely high-efficiency process delivers many new features — EC fan motors, refined defrost, and re-evaporation condensate handling.
What doesn't change
Body-holding performance stays 34–40°F, standard uprights stay plug-and-play 115V, and the cabinet warranty stays 10-year structural. The manufacturer's warranty governs the refrigeration package — AMC is the authorized dealer, Heatcraft Refrigeration Products LLC is the manufacturer.
