Morgue expansion projects — adding body storage capacity to an existing facility | American Mortuary Coolers

Morgue expansion is more common than new-build in most institutional settings. A hospital morgue, county ME office, or university anatomy program that has outgrown its current storage capacity typically needs to expand within an existing footprint rather than build new. This guide covers the primary expansion paths and how AMC equipment supports each one.

Option 1: Replace Upright Coolers with Higher-Capacity Units

If your current storage footprint uses 2-body or 4-body upright coolers and you have wall space for a taller or wider unit, replacing with 6-body or 8-body upright coolers adds storage without changing footprint area significantly. AMC upright coolers are available in standard dimensions for like-for-like replacements. See: Morgue Expansion Projects Hub.

Option 2: Add a Walk-In Cooler System

Adding a walk-in morgue cooling system is the highest-capacity expansion path when floor space is available. A 10×10 walk-in with 4-tier racks adds 8–10 body positions. A 10×16 adds 12–16 positions. AMC walk-in systems install against an exterior wall with through-wall condenser mounting. Interior panel construction requires 8–14 week lead time. See: Walk-In Cooler Storage Systems Hub.

Option 3: Add High-Density Rack Systems to Existing Walk-In Coolers

If your existing walk-in cooler interior is not fully racked, adding 4-tier side-loading racks or 5-tier racks to underutilized interior wall space can significantly increase body storage density without any construction. This is the fastest expansion path. See: Mortuary Racks Hub · Bulk Rack Pricing.

Option 4: Supplemental Upright Coolers for Surge Capacity

Adding supplemental upright coolers to an adjacent utility room, prep area, or storage corridor is a low-construction-cost surge capacity expansion. AMC 4-body and 6-body upright coolers require only standard 20A electrical service and can be positioned anywhere with adequate ventilation clearance.

Option 5: Portable / Temporary Expansion

For immediate surge needs, AMC can quote portable refrigerated trailer units or pre-positioned upright cooler inventory for rapid deployment. See: Portable Morgues & Temporary Morgue Cooling.
