PATHOLOGY PLANNING

Pathology Lab Equipment Planning Guide

Hospital surgical pathology, forensic labs, medical examiner offices. Content current as of May 1, 2026.

A well-planned pathology lab reduces errors, improves workflow, protects staff from exposure, and scales with case volume. Use this guide to align your equipment choices with your program goals.

Step 1: Define Your Workload

Case volume: How many specimens per day? Specimen types: Surgical biopsies only, or also autopsy/forensic? Staff size: How many pathologists, resident physicians, technicians? Hours of operation: 8-5 routine, or 24/7 on-call autopsy service?

Step 2: Space Planning

Grossing area: Dedicated workstations for tissue trimming and specimen prep. Budget 200-300 sq ft for 3-4 stations. Instrument area: Separate cleaning/sterilization station. Cold storage: Specimen refrigeration (4C) and freezer (-20C) capacity. Slide prep area: Stainer, processor, microscopy stations. Support: Handwashing sink, waste disposal, accessory storage.

Step 3: Compliance & Ventilation

Formaldehyde exposure: If using formalin, review OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1048 and establish exposure control plan. Ventilation: Dedicated exhaust or downdraft tables; typical 8-12 ACH. Waste handling: EPA RCRA plan for formalin, tissue, and chemical waste. Regulatory review: CAP accreditation, state board, hospital infection control.

Step 4: Equipment Selection

Workstations: USPE grossing stations with integrated sinks, stainless cutting surfaces, and drainage. Storage: Specimen refrigeration (vault cooler or reach-in), freezer for long-term storage. Support equipment: Instrument trolley, scale, lighting, sharps disposal. Documentation: Specimen tracking, maintenance logs, inspection records.
