Foot-Pedal Morgue Sink Stations — Hands-Free Design for Infection Control in Pathology Labs
Infection Control Starts at the Sink
The sink is the most frequently touched surface in a pathology lab or autopsy suite — and potentially the most significant cross-contamination point in any facility. Pathologists, embalmers, and dieners handle biological materials constantly during procedures. When they approach the sink for hand washing, their hands are already contaminated. A standard manual faucet requires a contaminated hand to touch the handle to turn on the water, then touches that same handle again after washing — defeating the purpose entirely.
Foot-pedal faucet controls break this contamination chain. AMC's foot-pedal operated morgue sink with stainless steel spray hose and 4-foot pedal sink station are purpose-designed for morgue, autopsy, and preparation room environments. For embalming station context, see our embalming station buyer's guide.
How Foot Pedal Valve Systems Work
Pedal Valve Mechanism
AMC's foot-pedal sinks use a floor-mounted pedal assembly connected to a valve body in the water supply line. Depressing the pedal opens the valve; releasing it closes the valve. The mechanism is entirely mechanical with no electrical power required. Hot and cold water are controlled by separate pedals or a combined mixing pedal depending on configuration.
Stainless Steel Spray Hose Integration
The integrated stainless steel spray hose allows directed water delivery to specific areas of the work surface, specimen, or body — essential for autopsy procedures requiring cavity rinsing, specimen cleaning, and surface decontamination. The hose retracts to a holder when not in use, keeping the work area clear.
Sink Basin Design
AMC's foot-pedal sink basins are fabricated from 14-gauge or heavier 304 stainless steel with coved interior corners that eliminate debris traps. Basin depth accommodates instrument cleaning and tissue specimen handling. Drain fittings connect to standard plumbing rough-in.
Infection Control Benefits
OSHA and CDC Requirements
OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) requires that hand washing facilities be readily accessible to employees exposed to blood or OPIM. CDC guidance for clinical laboratory settings recommends hands-free faucet controls. Foot-pedal operation satisfies this guidance by ensuring water can be activated without hand contact at any point in the hand washing sequence.
Eliminating Secondary Contamination
Secondary contamination — transfer of pathogens from contaminated surfaces to clean surfaces — is a persistent risk in autopsy and preparation environments. Studies of hospital environments consistently identify faucet handles as high-touch, frequently-contaminated surfaces. Eliminating manual faucet contact removes one of the most consistent secondary contamination vectors.
AMC Foot-Pedal Sink Models
Standard Foot-Pedal Morgue Sink with Spray Hose
AMC's standard foot-pedal morgue sink provides single-basin hands-free operation with integrated spray hose. The compact footprint suits preparation rooms and autopsy suites with limited wall space.
4-Foot Pedal Sink Station
The 4-foot pedal sink station offers an expanded work deck adjacent to the sink basin, providing counter space for instrument staging and PPE management. The extended deck is particularly useful in embalming prep rooms where staff need surface space for fluids and instruments adjacent to the sink.
Triple Scrub Sink Station
For facilities requiring multiple sink positions, AMC's triple stainless steel scrub sink station provides three independent sink basins in a single counter run. See our full pathology and autopsy equipment collection for all sink configurations.
Specification Guidance
Plumbing Rough-In Requirements
Foot-pedal sinks require standard hot and cold water supply lines and a drain rough-in. The foot pedal valve assembly is surface-mounted with no floor penetrations or special structural requirements. Coordinate with your plumbing contractor for supply and drain positioning before casework installation.
Material Compatibility
All AMC foot-pedal sink surfaces are 304 stainless steel, providing resistance to bleach-based disinfectants, quaternary ammonium compounds, formaldehyde-based embalming fluids, and standard laboratory cleaning agents. Avoid abrasive cleaning pads that scratch the surface and create bacterial harborage sites.
